Autumn and Halloween activities have been eating up (in a good way) our time this weekend. Today we did a combo lesson for Wee Gillis since we had not done a lesson in a few days.
Wee Gillis lives in Scotland, wears a kilt and learns to play the bagpipes. We enjoyed poking through a few videos about Scotland.
Doo colored a flag of Scotland and we found it on her globe and her wall map.
We also read about sheep since many clothes in Scotland are made of wool. We watched a video of a sheep being sheared. It was pretty neat to see. Doo was quite fascinated and thought it was funny when the sheep was obviously ready to get off her back and get on with her day.
Throughout our lesson we listened to a Scottish folk CD that I have had since college – Dawn Dance by Alasdair Fraser.
Wee Gillis takes care of his mother’s relations long-haired cows in the Lowlands. When it gets foggy, he at first has trouble calling them back to him to bring them home. His relations teach him how to yell loud and strengthen his lungs.
For Science today, we reviewed what fog is and how there are 4 types of fog. We also watched 2 videos showing fog.
Wee Gillis’ real name is very long and includes several family names. After reading the book, we talked about the various family names (at least all the ones I could think of). We discussed marriage and how often married people have the same name (but not in her Mama/Daddy!). It was a pretty quick lesson but she was chattering away about family names later on when we did laundry so she definitely found it interesting.
In the story there are two very similar pictures of Wee Gillis eating breakfast. They are almost identical minus 5 or so differences. So we compared and contrasted the pictures to find the differences in each one. Then Doo had fun playing a few of these compare/contrast games.
